After Nicole fell out of our bed, she is now fond of banging her head with a remote or with her hands. I’m not sure why is she doing that.

I did some googling and baby center says:

Head banging and body rocking are normal self-comforting behaviors in babies. The rhythmic back-and-forth movements may soothe your baby and help him drift off to sleep, in the same way being rocked in a rocking chair does. Strangely enough, your baby may also bang his head to distract himself from pain — if he’s teething or has an ear infection, for example.

Head banging is surprisingly common. Up to 20 percent of babies and toddlers bang their head on purpose, although boys are three times more likely to do it than girls. Head banging often starts in the second half of the first year and peaks between 18 and 24 months of age. Your baby’s head-banging habit may last for several months, or even years, though most children outgrow it by age 3.

It seems like she’s doing it when she’s sleepy or when she’s happy. Hopefully, it would not come to a point that she would hurt herself! I just wish she would stop doing that because it’s really disturbing.

  1. this caught my attention because my son is doing the same thing, he started when he’s 2yr/4mos. old. His pedia said that it’s normal and just ignore it because the more he perceives attention, the more likely he’ll do it again and again. He told us just to make sure that he’s not in danger. Put away the things that he’s using for head bang and instead divert his actions to something playful or fun. That’s what he advised for our son.

  2. Thanks for the advise Al!

We’ll definitely think of something that will divert her attention.

BTW, nice family you have there! :)

  3. Thanks for visiting my site Ms. Grace, BTW, how are you related to Sir Nico? are you the Grace we’ve known in L2S? I worked there as QA.

  4. Thanks! Nice post.

  5. head banging mamy? hmmmm…baka gs2 maging rakista ni nikki hehehe.. yeahhhh!..kidding aside, dont worry mamy i think it’s normal kc ganun din ung pamingkin ko dati. as in head bang kung head bang hahaha..pero eventually e nawala rin ung habit nya na yun..naaaliw lng cgro si nikki pero mawawala din un ;)

  6. my daughter does that too. she was five months when she started doing that. it was because she was teething. when her gums get itchy, she’d start banging her head with the book she’s holding or with any toy in sight. anyways, i’ve learned to put only stuffed toys around her during that time, so she doesn’t hurt her head much. nicole is sooo adorable, by the way. love her vids! :)
